A Holiday in Naples: A Sonata for Piano Solo
A Holiday in Naples: A Sonata for Piano (2021, rev. 2024)
I. At the Carnival
II. A Merchant at the Spinning Wheel
III. In the Ballroom
IV. At the Opera
V. At the Plaza
A Holiday in Naples is a five-movement programmatic piano work composed in 2021. It portrays a lone traveller exploring Naples in the late nineteenth century, with each movement depicting a vivid scene of his journey. The first movement, At the Carnival, opens with a tranquil introduction as the traveller arrives at the pier. The lively allegro captures the bustling carnival with scherzando figures and moments of serenity as he admires the coastline. In the second movement, A Merchant at the Spinning Wheel, arpeggiated passages convey the trance-like rhythm of a struggling merchant's work, intensifying as he spins faster. The third movement, In the Ballroom, sees the traveller awkwardly invite a young woman to dance. Despite initial stumbles, their confidence grows, and they enjoy the evening together. At the Opera, the fourth movement, depicts the traveller walking into a theatre during a romantic duet. Finally, At the Plaza returns to the carnival, where the traveller joins a spirited tarantella, dancing with the locals until dawn.
